Description

Avon Fire & Rescue Service (AF&RS) is encouraging people to consider a new career this winter when it opens applications for wholetime firefighters in November.

Aspiring firefighters will be able to start the application process from mid-November as the Service looks for the brightest and best to take part in a training school in 2019.

Under the campaign slogan ‘Yes You Can’, AF&RS will be accepting applications from residents within our Service boundary area which covers Bristol and parts of BANES, South Gloucestershire and North Somerset. More information on our Service area can be found on the Yes You Can website.

During the campaign, the Service will be encouraging applications from groups currently under-represented within its workforce, particularly women and people from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) backgrounds.

Ahead of the opening of applications, AF&RS is hosting a 'try before you apply' recruitment day where you can find out everything you need to know about the process and what it takes to be a firefighter, from fitness, practical assessments and mini-conferences.

The venue opens from 09:30-16:00 and to take full advantage you will need to book a ticket to one of the mini-conference events. You can then either browse around the market hall or take advantage of one of the many workshops:

  • Fitness Workshop
  • Practical Assessment Workshop
  • Application Workshops
  • One-to-one meetings with HR

Tickets on the day are limited, so please return any unwanted tickets as soon as possible.

We provide emergency and protection services to the communities of Bath & North East Somerset, Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire.

We are committed to providing a safer place for people to live, work and visit across an area of 134,753 hectares and a population of over one million.

While firefighting has traditionally been at the forefront of our work, the role of a modern fire and rescue service has increased to cover the core functions of 'preventing', 'protecting' and 'responding'.

A lot of our work now focuses on how we can prevent accidents and emergencies happening in the first place, as we believe this is the best way to protect our communities. We do this by providing advice and education through events, visits, campaigns and partnership working.

Alongside this work we also provide a '999' response service to a range of incidents and emergencies from road traffic collisions and fires, to flooding and chemical spills. We work closely with the other emergency services, as well as external agencies.
